BURN FAT & LOSE INCHES…The Bodies Weight Loss Set Point! (Dr. Mandell, Dr. Soffer, Dr. Myers)

I would like to introduce two of my colleagues who are medical doctors. Dr. Soffer is a Heart Specialist (Cardiologist) and Dr. Myers is an Internist. We will be discussing a very important topic about the biological set point of weight loss.

Recent studies point to body weight being affected by a combination of factors. Weight is determined by inherited traits, the environment, and by hormonal, psychological, and genetic elements. Weight also depends on energy burned compared to what’s taken in from calories.

The set point model relies on the concept of a genetic preset weight range that’s controlled by biological signals. The body has a regulatory system that keeps you at a steady-state level, or set point.

Your hypothalamus, which is in your brain, gets signals from fat cells. Hormones like leptin, which regulates hunger, and insulin are triggered at certain times. Your metabolism also constantly adjusts up or down based on a variety of signals.

The set point theory suggests that your weight may go up or down temporarily but will ultimately return to its normal set range. The signaling system helps maintain weight. (Healthline)

as a life long dieter and weight gain fighter…..I’m not sure I agree that a plateau and a set point are the same thing. I’ve reached plateaus that Ive had to fight around, but I also feel like my body has a “set point” weight that it always wants to go back to whether I’m below it or above it, it feels like I’m always settling into the same weight. Can we ever end that fight?

    • Nancy Smith says:

No, I dont think you can. I have read articles from doctors that say that of course you can starve yourself and loose weight and you can be a glutton for a while and gain weight but in the end, your body will fight to maintain a certain weight. A normal exercise program is good but like the doctors said, wherever you are the largest at ,it will still be the largest after exercising.

    • Tim S says:

@Nancy Smithweight is definitely an interesting area. We do need to maintain a healthy weight

    • Tim S says:

I’d recommend you try Apple Cider Vinegar every morning. Dr Mandell has done a great video on this subject.

    • Nancy Smith says:

@Tim S Of course it’s good to have a healthy body weight, but sometimes people expect unrealistic results. People that are the same age and sex but have a larger “frame” can’t expect to be the same weight as a petite small “framed” person.

    • Nancy Smith says:

@Tim S I don’t have a weight problem, but if I did, apple cider vinegarwouldntbe the answer for me and lots of other people. It tears my stomach up and gives me diarrhea for hours. Not a good way to start your day. Lol

  • Tim S says:

Weight loss is never easy. Stay strong 💪 my friends and remember no one is perfect. I hope you find this discussion useful.

Hey Doc, could u please make a video about longer types of fasting. I really trust what u say and I can’t find a good video on autophagy and multi day fasts. Started my 72hr fast today, but may end at 48 if it gets too rough😅

  • BCakesB says:

I’ve found that loosing weight starts with telling the body, I’m not on a diet. Exchange the bad foods with good foods, Exchange sweets with fruits n smoothies, special veggies smoothies, if u want a sweet, don’t buy a bag, buy a small amount n eat it, don’t do this every day, then get back in eating right. Don’t eat after 7:00. Eat a good breakfast n allow lunch to be your biggest meal n eat light for dinner. Walked in the morning, lunch time n after work. Used Walk Away the Pounds with Leslie Sansones help me a lot, walk 15 minutes is a mile, start slow, pray n watch the weight drop. I stop eating bread, no soda n junk food lost 80 pounds doing this.
