Do This in Bed Every Night Before Trying to Sleep! Dr. Mandell

When it's time to retire for the night, introducing a simple yet powerful practice into your bedtime routine can be truly transformative for your sleep quality. As you settle into bed, start by taking a moment to give your body and mind the signal that it's time to wind down. This can be achieved by engaging in peaceful, rhythmic humming, which can have miraculous benefits.

Practicing a combination of deep exhalation and gentle humming first prompts the activation of your parasympathetic nervous system—the body's natural relaxation response. This night-time ritual, though seemingly small and effortless, performs wonders within your body. It encourages physiological changes that foster relaxation, including a reduction in heart rate and a decrease in blood pressure.

But it doesn't stop there! This therapeutic humming supports your overall wellness by unlocking the wider benefits associated with a well-engaged parasympathetic system. These range from improved digestion through enhanced vagal tone, to a balanced immune response, aiding our body's inherent ability to recover, restore, and rebalance during our restful slumber.

By introducing this bedtime humming ritual, you’re not only paving the way for more restful and restorative sleep, but you're also promoting overall well-being and health. Here's to a night of tranquility, healthier sleep, and waking up feeling refreshed!"

Thanks doc! Vibrating vocal chords made me think of people who are alone and dont talk to anyone all day. Sounds like this may contribute to depression.

I wish. But we know they wouldn’t beget those government kickbacks that they get for pushing poison to their patients.

  • @renedrake9407 says:

Interesting- humming like you explained reminds me of meditation that ends with humming OM (the sound of the universe as they say)
An explanation of what is actually happening on a physiological level. Thank you

I can pretty much always fall asleep. If I wake up a couple hours later though for whatever reason, I can never go back to sleep. I slept an entire 6 hours straight last night. It was heavenly

I work til 1am so when I’m at work and it’s really busy non stop I hum a song while doing my work and that really does make a difference. Relaxes me, makes me feel good, it winds me down and helps me focus on what im doing calmy. Didnt know anything about this nerve but dam does it work. It also rubs off on people because they say, You’re always happy, calm and look like you enjoy work. I do love my job and so since it makes me feel better and have done it ever since. I drive home relaxed and after a nice relaxing shower I sleep like a baby listening to a sleep meditation video.
