Please join me in welcoming Dr. Ian Lake! Dr. Lake is a medical doctor and type 1 diabetic who ran 5 marathons while fasting for 5 days. He ran a total of 100 miles in 5 days! Dr. Lake's main goal was to show how nutritional ketosis can be safe for type 1 diabetics.
Keep in mind that to accomplish this dangerous and amazing feat, Dr. Lake trained his body in many different ways. Taking something like this lightly could have been deadly.
A type 1 diabetic can not produce insulin in enough volume to maintain blood sugar. This is very different from type 2 diabetes. People with type 2 diabetes have more than enough insulin and often have too much, leading to insulin resistance.
Dr. Lake explains that our bodies can multifuel, which means we can use sugars and fats for energy. In an ideal situation, our bodies can flip between whatever fuel they need. To burn fat as fuel, your insulin has to be low.
Dr. Lake lost over a pound of fat per day during his 5-day fast. To prepare for a longer fast, you have to become fat-adapted. You must lower insulin to adapt your body to running on fat fuel. To lower insulin, lower the food that stimulates insulin—carbohydrates.
Diabetic ketoacidosis is a dangerous condition associated with type 1 diabetes. Ketoacidosis occurs when sugar in the blood can not get inside of the cells, starving them of energy. Some medical professionals believe that ketosis can put you at risk for ketoacidosis, but other doctors are against this idea.
Dr. Lake currently follows the keto diet, leaning more towards the carnivore diet. His diet consists of about 100 grams of protein per day, dairy, and some leafy greens.

Hi, everyone! Who has just started a keto? I’ve been doing mine for a week and feel so great!
Hello from Thailand!
Same here. Just started mine 1 week and 1day in now and I feel great plus I have lost some weight too
Me, I’ve been into about 3 months…so far so good, except my LDL went way up. But supposedly that is normal..
Not meI -started in 2013 and My dad started in 1972 with Dr Atkins first book
Same here I’m 4 mos in cheated over the holiday season. I happen 2 love cornbread stuffing & cranberry sauce so I gave in2 having some during the holidays. Apart from the weight loss i have noticeable improvements in my overall health.
สวัสดีครับ keep up the good work! Are you doing one meal a day as well? I find that helps a lot, and is also a big time saver 😊
I have been
1. drinking Heapwell Ceremonial Matcha
2. Intermittent Fasting 18/6 hours
Lost 8 kg in 3 months at a healthy pace
Kinda similar situation here. I do fasting 16/8 , quit sodas and starting working out. I have lost 4 kg in one and a half month pretty comfortably. I have yet to fix my sleep schedule and lower my carbs even more. I’m fascinated to continue the process
How did u manage after 12 hrs
Headaches giddiness ?
@@user-eg4sq8dn1hAdd sugar free electrolytes to prevent headaches. 16/8 IF is fairly easily to get through it.
Thank you! You just reminded me to drink my ceremonial matcha 😢
Great interview with the 2 docs love you guys
Glad to know that you liked this post!
Just broke into my first sustained 20/minute mile over 5 miles with a 15lbs pack weight of the season. Walking can’t really be overstated on how good it is. It nukes time sure, but something about it just feels good and works well. Hoping by the end of the season I’ll be able to keep the slow jogging constant so I can push to runs when needed without breaking form. Eventual goal is a marathon a day.
Hello Dr Berg — straight off the bat —-
The first thing I learned from this interview – is that Type 1 & Type 11 Diabetes are NOT the same.
I always thought that Type 2 Diabetes & Type 1 Diabetes were different stages in the same condition – —– Dr Ian Lake has explained it perfectly.
This reminds me of how David Goggins was training to become a Navy Seal and he only had about 90 days to lose about 100lbs. Lots of running and minimal eating.
I truly learned a lot. I will be watching again to get all the facts correct. Thanks.
Same here
Very glad to be of help.

An amazing interview, Dr Berg! Loved the fact that a medical doctor was invited to share his own thoughts and experience on this topic. You’re a wonderful professional 💖

Happy you found it useful! Be well!
Such a wonderful interview, Dr Berg. Excellent informative content. Thank you 🙏🏻
I’m glad you liked this post.
Dr. Berg, when I first discovered you, it was from a referral from a friend who suggested that i try keto for weight loss. I watched your videos every single day and saved bideos for a personal playlist, and i listened all through the day for support. I lost 96 pounds and have kept it off for 4 years. Over the past 4 months, though, my situation has changed, and i am struggling: every day is an uphill battle. Please consider doing daily KETO bideos again. Your information and presentation are always so rich, and I appreciate you so much! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Dr. Berg had to chill on using the word, “keto,” because YT is suppressing keto content. (And promoting the “keto diet is dangerous” narrative).
@@lexibat7829 oh! Thank you!
Dr Berg is an amazing educator and has helped me get on track with how to live a healthy lifestyle and feeling great mentally and physically through the Keto weight loss program, thank you Dr Berg
Agree!!
9 months ago I was 67 and pre-diabetic, 6’/245 lbs., went on 20-4 fast everyday, run 10 miles and walk 10 miles per week. I still eat carbs but a more reasonable amount. I’m now 175 and back to a size 32. Fasting/exercise works!
That sir is VERY VERY INSPIRING. Excellent work at 67! Im 225 and 56. Im going to do the same. Great leadership sharing. 😊
So what time eggzackly did you eat?
Can you share what you ate in 4 hr window? What did you do for hunger pangs?
Just eat meat. We don’t need carbs. Congrats though, big weight loss.
Cut out all sugar, only eating fruits and vegetables, and Grass fed beef. One meal a day I have lost 25 pounds in 45 days.
Context is important. What was your original weight?
not really@@RealHomeRecording what he says is 100% good for everyone. just add some nuts to that and everything you need is in one meal.
Wow 😮
Not bad here.. I see amino acids from beef with much other mineral s. I see potassium from fruits and fibers with slow release of glucose via such🎉
When you first started, were you hungry all the time and if so, what did you do to curb your hunger pangs?
My mom is a type 2 diabetic and she has been doing intermittent fasting for over a year now and has reaped amazing benefits from it. In addition to loosing the weight, she has regained mobility and energy, she has even started looking younger.
your mother should look into carnviore diet. Many are reversing their type 2 within weeks /months.
channels Dr Ken Berry vds Carnivore for beginners, ketoflu, electrolyes, Kelly hogan, steak and butter gal, home stead how, shawn baker md podcast = tons of interviews of people tht have healed/reversed every health issues including type 2
How was her cognitive performance in a ketosis state? I’m interested in this specific area
Need to put this on repeat so I can learn and understand all this! Thank you to both of you!
Very glad to be of help.
As a Type 1 Diabetic, Dr. Eric Berg’s content is unmatched.
Dr. Berg, please keep doing what you are doing. You’re truly helping so many people whose questions are not able to be answered by other doctors.
You’re a blessing for us all!
This was one of your best interviews. He explained everything so thoroughly.
Amazing video again! Love the effort you and people in your vids put into sharing important knowledge.
I’m a type 1 diabetic diagnosed at the age of 25. I just turned 35 and cannot lose weight like I use to be able too. This video has shed so much light on the problem! Thank you!!!
